It doesn't need to be St. Patrick's Day to enjoy Irish mixed drinks. These popular Irish cocktails are delicious any time of the year. Popular Irish alcoholic drink recipes include traditional ingredients such as Irish whiskey and the Irish import beer, Guinness extra-dry stout.

1. Irish Coffee

This coffee drink was invented just after World War II by an Irish bar man who wanted a drink that would revive airplane passengers after a long flight. This recipe serves two.

Ingredients

  • 3 ounces Irish whiskey
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 12 ounces of strong brewed coffee
  • Unsweetened whipped cream for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat two Irish coffee mugs in boiling water. Dry the glasses and pour in the whiskey and sugar. Stir.
  2. Pour in the hot coffee and stir the drink to dissolve the sugar.
  3. Top the coffee mixture with a generous dollop of whipped cream.

2. Irish Old-Fashioned

This twist on a traditional old fashioned cocktail uses Irish whiskey.

  • 1 sugar cube
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Splash of water

Instructions

  1. In a rocks glass, combine the sugar cube, bitters, and water. Muddle until the sugar dissolves in the water.
  2. Add the whiskey and ice cubes. Stir.
  3. Garnish with the orange peel.

3. Irish Car Bomb

This popular Irish cocktail tastes something like a chocolate milk shake. Note that it is not for the faint of heart because you have to chug the entire half pint of Guinness in one gulp. If you don't, the cream will curdle.

  • ½ ounce Bailey's Irish Cream
  • ½ ounce Irish whiskey, such as Jameson

Instructions

  1. Pour the Guinness into a highball glass.

  3. Drop the shot into the Guinness, and chug the whole glass immediately.

4. Angry Irishman

This a simple and delicious two ingredient Irish mixed drink.

In a rocks glass, pour the Bailey's and the whiskey over ice and stir.

5. Irish Handshake

While not exactly of Irish descent, the Irish Handshake is popular for its green color.

  • 1 ounce heavy cream

  1. Chill a martini glass.

  4. Strain into the chilled martini glass.

6. Hot Irish

This Irish whiskey version of a hot toddy is like a warm blanket on a cold night.

  • 4 ounces boiling water
  • ½ ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • Pinch ground cinnamon
  • Brown sugar

  2. Add brown sugar to taste.
  3. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

7. Irish Shillelagh

  1. In a cocktail shaker, combine the whiskey, gin, rum, schnapps, lemon juice, and simple syrup.

8. Irish Pride

This green minty drink is a delicious way to show your Irish pride.
