A Miami Vice drink is a frozen blended cocktail made with rum. It is the perfect mixed drink for sipping in hot weather. The Miami Vice cocktail is sweet and refreshing with layers of red and cream color and complementary flavors of strawberries and coconut.
How to Make a Miami Vice Cocktail
To make the Miami Vice mixed drink, you will need a blender and plenty of crushed ice. It's a combination of strawberry daiquiri and piña colada. The drink is layered, so you'll need to make two different cocktail recipes. Have a pitcher handy to hold the first cocktail so you can reuse the blender to make the second.
Piña Colada Layer
You'll always get the best flavor when you use the freshest ingredients to make your mixed drinks. This includes using fresh or frozen fruit and fruit juices instead of mixes, although you can always substitute a piña colada mix for the pineapple, pineapple juice, and coconut cream if you prefer; however, the flavors won't be as good.
Ingredients
- 1½ cups crushed ice
- ½ cup fresh or frozen, crushed pineapple
- 2 ounces pineapple juice
- 2 ounces coconut cream
- 1½ ounce Malibu rum
- 1 ounce dark rum
Instructions
- In a blender, combine all ingredients.
- Blend until smooth.
- Pour the piña colada into a pitcher and set aside. Rinse the blender.
Strawberry Daiquiri Layer
Next, you'll make the frozen strawberry daiquiri. Again, while you can use a strawberry daiquiri mix, the drink's flavor will benefit from making it from scratch. Choose deep red fresh strawberries when they're in season. When strawberries are out of season, your drink will have more flavor if you use frozen no sugar added strawberries.
Ingredients
- 1½ cups crushed ice
- 10 ripe strawberries, hulled and sliced (or ¾ cup frozen, sliced strawberries)
- ¾ ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
- ¾ ounce triple sec or another orange liqueur
- 1½ ounces rum
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a blender.
- Blend until smooth.
To Layer the Drink
Pour the daiquiri and piña colada in alternating layers in a tall glass. Make as many layers as you wish.
Garnish
Garnish with a pineapple wedge or a strawberry (or both).
Variations on the Miami Vice
While there are no formal variations of this recipe, you can make several simple switches to create different versions of a Miami Vice cocktail.
- Omit rum in both blends to make virgin cocktails.
- Use 151 rum in place of white rum for stronger cocktails.
- Use spiced rum or a flavored rum, such as pineapple.
- Replace rum with an equal amount of tequila.
- Change the flavors in the daiquiri, such as using fresh or frozen raspberries, blackberries, melon, mango, or papaya. Don't omit the lime juice, however, because you need it to balance sweetness.
- Add a half banana to the daiquiri layer to add even more tropical flavor.
- Add ½ ounce blue curaçao to the piña colada layer to make it bright blue.
