A hot buttered rum recipe can help you create a drink that can be a welcome sight during the holiday season. When you make this warm and sweet drink, it can remind you of sweets you may have had as a child. Of course, it packs a bit more of a punch than a traditional butterscotch candy does.
Hot Buttered Rum Variations
There are several different ways to make hot buttered rum. Here are a few recipes you may wish to try.
Old Fashioned Buttered Rum
This recipe calls for the following ingredients:
- 1 cup of sugar (1/2 white sugar, 1/2 brown sugar)
- 1 cup of butter or margarine
- 2 cups of any brand of vanilla ice cream
- 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
- Light rum
In a saucepan, combine the sugar and the butter and then simmer until the butter is completely melted, stirring as needed. Using a mixing bowl, combine the butter and sugar mixture with the ice cream. Mix the ingredients thoroughly and refrigerate until you're ready to serve the drink.
When you're ready to begin your party, pour 1 cup of the mixture into each guest's mug. Top each mug with 1 ounce of light rum and fill the rest of the way with boiling water. Stir the ingredients and top each mug with cinnamon as a garnish.
Crock Pot Buttered Rum
If you don't want to expend so much time and elbow grease, try this recipe which requires very little effort. You'll need:
- 1 cup of brown sugar
- 1/4 cup or margarine or butter
- 6 cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg
- 1 cup of dark rum
- Whipped cream for garnish
In a crock pot, combine everything but the rum, nutmeg and whipped cream, and then pour in 1 quart of hot water. After stirring, set the crock pot on low and let the drink simmer for at least four hours. When it's done simmering, pour in just enough rum to suit your taste. Pour the drink into mugs while it's still hot and garnish each drink with cream and nutmeg.
Honey Buttered Rum
For a little sweeter and thicker drink, try this variation. You'll need:
- 1/2 cup of butter
- 3/4 cup of brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons of honey
- 1 tablespoon each of nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon
- 1 gallon of apple cider
- Dark rum
In a small bowl, mix together all of the ingredients except for the apple cider and the rum. Do not heat them. Instead, place them in the refrigerator. In a large saucepan, pour the apple cider and bring it to a simmer it for 20 minutes. When you're ready to serve the drinks, fill the mugs about 3/4 full with the cider. Next, add some of the cold mixture and rum to taste. Mix well before drinking.
Non Alcoholic Version
To make each drink recipe a non alcoholic hot buttered rum recipe, simply omit the rum. The beverage will still prove to be very tasty. The rum doesn't add much essential flavor. It's just there to add some kick and help warm you up inside on a cold and blustery autumn or winter night.
Make It Extra Buttery
To make your drink extra buttery, no matter which recipe you use, place a butterscotch candy in the bottom of your mug before you pour your drink into it. The heat will dissolve the candy and give you an extra shot of buttery sweetness that's guaranteed to hit the spot.
